The Pay It Forward Conference Frequently Asked Questions
What is Pay It Forward?
Pay It Forward is the idea that individuals can make a difference in this world by doing a good deed and by asking the recipient not pay them back, but to “pay it forward” to three more people creating an endless chain of good deeds.
How did Pay It Forward start at Great Neck South Middle School?
The notion of creating a Pay It Forward club was brought back from a trip to the Holocaust Museum and Tolerance Center in Glen Cove. Students wanted to reduce tension, diffuse bullying and create a better environment in the school, their community and in the world around them. This notion was brought to the Shared Decision Making committee, eventually becoming a fully recognized activity within the school.
What activities has PIF been involved in?
The PIF Club at Great Neck South Middle School, in just over a year and half, has organized three “Senior Proms” at the Bristal Senior Living Center and set up an active online PIF Wish list where individuals have been able to pay forward living room furniture, computers, printers, game boys, clothes and even an automobile! In addition, the PIF Club organized a school-wide “Read to Feed” program in order to promote literacy, while raising over $2,400 to benefit Heifer International, an organization that seeks to end hunger and heal the earth.

The conference will house roughly 20 middle and high schools from Nassau County each with six students and one teacher attendee. The conference takes place on Friday, April 4th from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at Barry Tech High School in Westbury, NY. Additional sponsors thus far include Heifer International, Starbucks of Westbury, Habitat for Humanity, Island Harvest, the Red Cross, Coalition Against Child Abuse, The Interfaith Nutrition Network, the Make-a-Wish Foundation, The League, The Giving Game, The Sierra Club, The Environmental Education Foundation, Doc to Dock, www.lemonpndcake.com, Bagel Boss Carle Place, M'Yad L'Yad, Great Neck's Total Community Involvement UPTC subcomittee and Barnes and Noble of Manhasset. Featured speakers will be Catherine Ryan Hyde, author of Pay It Forward (via videoconference), Julie Peterson of State Bank of North Dakota and Tony Woodell, Heifer International’s Director of Community Relations.
How can my school get involved?
Schools may send up to six students and one teacher representative for the conference. You must fill out the BOCES registration form and fax it back to them with the registration fee. Potential funding requests can be made to your student governments, principals, superintendents of curriculum and instruction or district superintendents.
What can my non-profit do to help?
Non-profits can: 1. Have a representative at a table/booth to answer questions. 2. Bring brochures for the attendees. 3. Provide some promotional items/giveaways for gift bags for attendees. 4. Have ready made PIF/volunteer opportunities for students to sign up for on the spot. 5. Volunteer to help facilitate student/group discussions during the conference.
Together, we can pay it forward. Together, we can teach our children that a belief in people’s innate good need not be for the hopeful, but for the realistic. We can make this happen. Let’s pay it forward together!
